Considering Uncertainty in Unequal Area Block Layout Design

نویسنده

چکیده

This paper presents an extended formulation of the unequal area facilities block layout problem which explicitly considers uncertainty in material handling costs by use of expected value and standard deviations of product forecasts. This formulation is solved using a random keys genetic algorithm (RKGA) heuristic with a flexible bay construct of the departments and total facility area. It is shown that depending on the attitude towards uncertainty of the decision maker, the optimal layout can change significantly. The seminal 20 department problem of Armour and Buffa is studied with varying numbers of products and amount of forecast uncertainty. The RKGA is shown to be a robust optimizor that allows a user to make an explicit characterization of the cost and uncertainty trade-offs involved in a particular block layout problem.

1. Introduction to the Unequal Area Facility Layout Problem

This paper presents an extended formulation of the unequal area facilities block layout problem which explicitly considers uncertainty in material handling costs by use of expected value and standard deviations of product forecasts. This formulation is solved using a random keys genetic algorithm (RKGA) to circumvent the need for repair operators after crossover and mutation. Because this probl...

Optimization of block layout design problems with unequal areas: A comparison of MILP and MINLP optimization methods

The block layout design problem with unequal areas, which was originally formulated by Armour and Buffa in the early 1960s, is a fundamental optimization problem encountered in many manufacturing and service organizations. In this paper, we present a new modelling framework for effectively finding global optimal solutions for the block layout design problem with unequal areas. The most fundamen...

Mathematical Programming Models for Solving Unequal-Sized Facilities Layout Problems - a Generic Search Method

This paper present unequal-sized facilities layout solutions generated by a genetic search program named LADEGA (Layout Design using a Genetic Algorithm). The generalized quadratic assignment problem requiring pre-determined distance and material flow matrices as the input data and the continuous plane model employing a dynamic distance measure and a material flow matrix are discussed. Computa...

Choosing the Optimum Underground Mine Layout with Regard to Metal Price Uncertainty Using Expected Utility Theory

Metal price is one of the most important parameters in the calculation of cut- off grade. The cut- off grade has the main role in determination of mine layout. Mine layout actuates mineable reserve, mine life and economic profitability. Not considering the uncertainty in metal prices can lead to a non-optimal layout. In this paper optimum underground mine layout is determined by expected utilit...

Integrated Facilities Design using a Contour Distance Metric

The unequal area facility design problem has been studied in the literature generally by considering block layout separate from detailed design. This paper shows a tractable method for concurrently optimizing department shape and location within the facility, and selection of the appropriate number of input/output (I/O) stations per department and then optimally locating them. The distance metr...
